Graduated Heishi Beaded Necklace
A absolutely, beautiful piece. This classic Southwestern Santo Domingo necklace is comprised of individually cut turquoise disc beads strewn together for a truly eye-catching accessory. This piece is a perfect layering necklace or worn as a stand alone piece for a pop of colour.
Heishi (from the Santo Domingo word for “shell”) traditionally referred to necklace shell beads. However, today it describes tiny, handmade beads of any material. The Santo Domingo Pueblo carvers are the most proficient heishi producers. The process includes cutting the minuscule material into thin square strips after which holes are drilled through the center and strung together. The rough squares are then shaped and smoothed in disc shape by holding the strands against a turning stone wheel.
